This year's meeting takes place on Sunday, October 23, in Yokohama. It will also be streamed live for those watching from home. Exchanges will focus on water and how this precious resource can be protected. A wide variety of panels will explore tackling water pollution, equitable access to water and how to protect societies from catastrophes such as tsunamis and floods. Cheryl Ames, Associate Professor of Applied Marine Biology at Tohoku University's Graduate School of Agriculture Science, will host a panel on preserving biodiversity. Ames, who has dedicated her career to studying marine organisms, will touch on her recent endeavors to build an environmental DNA (eDNA) monitoring system for the distribution of octopus species across the Tohoku region. Panelists are expected to discuss the effects of climate change on our water systems, and the steps the global community can take to document and preserve aquatic biodiversity. Representatives from Tohoku University also include Fumiko Imamura, Director and Professor at the Institute of Disaster Science (IRIDeS), and Takako Izumi, Associate Professor at IRIDeS. They will feature on a panel about disaster prevention and relief. Meanwhile, Fumio Inagaki, Professor at the Department of Earth Sciences, will be on a panel discussing climate change.
